A QUEENSLAND University of Technology business researcher says new businesses should start marketing themselves via the internet.

Shane Mathews, from the School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, said new businesses needed to think globally and act digitally from the beginning. “Micro and small businesses should not wait until they’ve grown to a certain size before they harness international marketing capability of the internet to compete in the global marketplace,” Mr Mathews said. “Many businesses that internetalise from the start can experience phenomenal international growth. For example, one firm distributed to 44 countries within six months of inception.” Mr Mathews said people now trusted the internet for major transactions, as seen in the growth of online flight and accommodation sites which have partly replaced traditional travel agencies. “The internet is now the primary source of information for travel consumers,” he said. “Having a website is essential as it is the first place prospective clients go t check if the company is real. “This is especially important for the firm’s international customers as they don’t have a physical presence. So, without a website the company does not exist in the consumer’s mind.” He said business owners must develop their internet marketing skills, including search engine marketing.
